France's system of road numbering and signage make cross-country navigation pretty easy. Finding one's way in and out of larger cities is an entirely different situation.
The go-to sign is "Centre Ville", which is well-posted except when completely obvious. We re-learned a few lessons today; 1. they don't say which Ville you are headed to the centre of when you are in the suburbs, and 2. they are of no use when trying to escape the city (if you follow them in reverse, you could end up anywhere).
We also found that the great highway signage often does not appear until well outside the downtown, and that the name of the street that you need to follow often changes several times.
The camping signs will often let us home in directly to where we need to be, but the campsites are often closed this late in the year.
The " all directions" can be very misleading ...
On two occasions today, we resorted to sparking up the GPS in the mobile, and pressing the "where the heck are we?" button. Feels a bit like cheating, but works like a charm!
