We started the day in the old Roman city of Arles, spent most of it riding in the wind across the Camargue (the wetlands at the mouth of the Rhone) and finished next to the sea in La Grande-Motte, a planned resort town built in the 60's and 70's.
The town includes a vast amount of camping within a walk of centre ville; all but one campground are closed and it is nearly deserted. Were it not the off-season, we would be paying 45€ for our site (and still no paper or seats in the sanitaire!)
The plan for tomorrow is to sneak past Montpellier by riding the roads and bike paths along the waterfront. We are learning to be suspicious of French bike paths, as the signage is poor, the surface unreliable and they seem to end abruptly at awkward moments. Still, we were saved by one today beneath a motorway that got us over the Rhone, so we remain hopeful.
