Beginning of our Roman era

Today we were tourists. The bikes stayed locked to a tree while we visited the Pont Du Gard and the related museum, cine, snack bar, etc.

When we were here so many years ago, we remember rounding a corner, seeing the bridge and going "whoa, that's an old one" as we rolled over it.   Now it has UNESCO world heritage site status, and is guarded by parking lots, tour buses and a man who wants 10€ from me. What's more, you are meant to park your bikes and walk (though we rolled over last nite for free!)

But ... the whole site is amazingly well-done and we have learned more about aqueducts than we could have imagined. Seems that all of the water flowing over the Pont was destined for Nimes, which was at the time (ad 80) the third largest roman city in Gaul.

So ... tomorrow we are headed to Nimes.
